This week, I probably broke every rule in the hypermiling book. I was running late for an out-of-town meeting, so I ended up creeping above the speed limit several times. I really was trying to keep it at the speed limit, but knowing that I was running late just didn't help. So, my hypermiling tip of the week would be to plan ahead and leave early so you have plenty of time to get to where you are going. I don't need to worry about this when I am driving around my own town. For the short distance, my hypermiling doesn't result in a measurable delay at all. For greater distances, that could translate to a 5-10 minutes difference per hour of travel time.
Also, it was HOT here this week, so I have been running the air conditioner, despite knowing this would significantly reduce my hypermiling MPG average. I have even had to stop and wait for someone a couple of times this week, and chose to keep the car running so the car stayed cooler. I also couldn't bring myself to turn off the engine, even at the long red lights that I knew would keep me awhile. I don't know whether this will significantly affect my hypermiling MPG, but I will be posting that soon.
